Plastics and materials resistant to high temperature / Friction

Rdiplastics has developed, according to the specifications of the client, all kinds of injection mold projects and plastic injection with plastic materials resistant to high temperatures / plastics “High Heat”.

There are different plastic materials resistant to high temperatures / high heat plastics, with different ranges of endurance, the approximate order is as follows:

    • ABS-Anticaloric. 110ºC
    • PA-Polyamide
    • APEC-Polycarbonate high heat
    • PPO-Polyphenylene
    • PSU / PESU-Polysulfone
    • ULTEM-Polyetherimide
    • PES-Polyethersulfone
    • PPS / RYTON-Phenylene polysulfide
    • PBT-Polybutylene terephthalate
    • SPS-syndiotactic polystyrene
    • PEEK (Polyetheretherketone)

Some of these high temperature resistant plastics / “High Heat” plastics can withstand continuous temperatures of up to 350 ° C and peaks of 450 ° C.

The choice of material is determined by the required resistance temperature, by the additional manufacturing processes (metallization, painting …) and the use to be given to this piece of plastic (resistance to friction, weathering, to products chemicals, ultraviolet light …)

High-temperature plastics / “High Heat” plastics, we can find them in natural or modified with fillers such as molybdenum disulphide, fiberglass, graphite …

The molds for injection of plastics of high temperature parts are special molds that require additional treatments to guarantee the processability of the material.

The manufacturing process of plastic parts resistant to temperature is complex and additional processes are required to inject plastic to ensure that the materials do not lose their technical characteristics and / or the visual aspect is appropriate.

This type of materials have had a great development during the last years, both in technical characteristics and in price, the price is directly linked to the endurance temperature. There is no linear price – temperature relationship, but the price of a material that has a resistance to the temperature of “X + 100 degrees” can be 3-5-10 times higher than one that holds “X”

High temperature resistant plastics: PEEK

PEEK is a semi-crystalline plastic thermos with excellent chemical and mechanical resistance properties that are preserved at elevated temperatures. The Young’s modulus is 3.6 GPa and its tensile strength is 90 to 100 MPa. [ 4 ] PEEK has a glass transition temperature around 143 ° C and melts at around 343 ° C (662 ° F). It is highly resistant to thermal degradation, , as well as attacks from both aqueous and organic environments. It is attacked by halogens and strong Bronsted and Lewis acids , as well as some halogenated compounds and aromatic hydrocarbons at high temperatures.

Due to its robustness, PEEK is used to manufacture elements used in the most demanding applications, including bearings , piston parts, pumps ,valve plate compressors , and cable insulation. It is one of the few plastics compatible with ultra-high vacuum applications. PEEK is considered an advanced biomaterial used in medical implants. . It is used extensively in the aerospace, automotive, Teletronic, and chemical process industries.
